Technical Specialists

We believe technical skills are the cornerstone of intellectual property law and the best way to provide the highest level of client service is to train engineers and scientists in IP law. In fact, many of our lawyers started their careers as Technical Specialists.

Our Technical Specialists, including Patent Agents, are an integral part of our client service teams. They have diverse backgrounds in areas such as microbiology, chemistry, mathematics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and computer science, including practical and clinical experience in corporate or laboratory environments. Using their engineering or scientific expertise, they work directly with our attorneys to commercialize and protect our clients’ intellectual property while learning the intricacies of applicable law.

After joining our team, Technical Specialists also work directly with inventors, scientists and engineers on ground-breaking drug discoveries, innovative clean technologies, novel software development and other projects. Typical projects include: strategic development of IP portfolios; due diligence related to financing, mergers and acquisitions; patent preparation and prosecution; investigating the patent landscape; trademarks; and providing technical support in patent litigation.

Training and professional development is an integral part of our technical specialist program. In addition to working closely with attorneys and clients, Technical Specialists will participate in formal training programs and our informal Lecture Lunch series.

Technical Specialists typically work full time for a year and then continue their employment, usually on a modified schedule, while attending evening law school (a four year program). Upon successful completion of law school, the technical specialist program allows for accelerated entrance into associate levels.

We are always looking for talented engineers and scientists with superior technical skills, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a desire to learn about intellectual property law. If you are interested in learning more about joining our team, please submit your resume to:
